While subcultures have existed almost certainly as long as cultures have, the internet has allowed them to proliferate in incredible ways. Every fandom has a subreddit, and every niche aesthetic has a Tumblr page dedicated to it. The way we listen to music has also changed in drastic ways since the advent of streaming. Since you're no longer bound by what's on your local radio or what records were sold in your town's record store, you can listen to music that nobody else around you has even heard of.

When I was thirteen, I fancied myself deeply alternative and cool because I listened to indie and curated a Tumblr page. This was an important step in my development as a person and as an artist.
